This RSPB Reserve is situated at the head of the Dee Estuary on the Wirral side, looking across to the Welsh Hills. When it’s wet and freezing in the Pennines it’s mild and a lot drier on the Wirral!
The Reserve consists of wetland, reedbeds, fens, farmland and woodland and should provide good
views of winter wildfowl, waders and possibly flocks of finches and other farmland species. There are good,
mainly level paths & boardwalks to the hides and viewpoints. The furthest hide is about 2km from the
heated Visitors centre. There are 2 other hides and several viewpoints and seats – there is also a brand new café with smart new toilets.
!
There is no space for coaches at the Reserve, so we will be parked up in the village next to
Burton Manor and then walk from Burton to the RSPB reserve via a 1km lane and woodland
path (which could be muddy after rain).
At the Reserve there is an entrance fee for non-RSPB members of £7 per person. If anyone
joins on the day, they would enter for free and their first payment to the membership only
comes out two months later.
Entrance is free for RSPB members **N.B. Please remember your RSPB membership
cards.
Although the coach will drop us and pick us up in Burton it will be parked for most of the day
at Ness Gardens – Liverpool University’s Botanic Garden. If you have friends and relatives
who may fancy a day out to the Wirral but are more interested in gardens than in the RSPB
reserve then we can arrange a Bespoke trip for them!
Please speak with us in advance if you know someone who would like to stay at Ness Gardens for the day.
Note – it will not be possible to combine Ness Gardens with the RSPB Reserve.
The trip is open to members as well as friends and family. The coach will leave Manchester Road cul-de-sac, Rochdale OL11 4HY at 9.00am prompt and will set off on its return journey at 5.00pm. The cost is
£20. Contact rfnspublicity@gmail.com with any queries. Please pay your £20 beforehand by bank
transfer: Sort code 05-07-67 Account number 60931963 and use your name as reference. Then
email rfnspublicity@gmail.com to book your place on the coach. Please note that your place is not
reserved until you receive a reply to that email.
