Non Flowering Plants

Once famed for its manufacturing industry, Rochdale has undergone rapid changes since the 1956 clean air act and lichen are now found on many of the trees and walls in the area.

Healey Dell Nature reserve is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) for mosses and liverworts.

The damp stone edges of the locks in the Rochdale canal also host several interesting liverworts and mosses, whilst the moorland bog is dominated by acid-loving plant communities, especially Sphagnum mosses.
