Why not build a tracking tunnel and find out?
It’s easy, affordable and fun, as we found out at a members workshop in February.
- Download the instruction leaflet
- Shell out for the necessary kit (we spent about £7)
- Cut the board to size, prepare the base and form a tent-shaped tunnel
- Make some hedgehog-safe ink (pure carbon powder in vegetable oil)
- Apply the ink and a fix a couple of sheets of A4 paper to the board
- Attach a dish of bait – hedgehog food , peanuts, sunflower seeds – definitely not milk, bread or fish
- Put the tunnel in your garden alongside a fence, wall or other boundary and leave it alone overnight
- Wait excitedly!
- Inspect the paper for footprints and try to identify the creatures that made them – here’s an excellent guide that will help

Baited and ready to go!

The tunnel in place, waiting for visitors!

Success!
Now what made those tracks…?
