Bee Walks
The regular bee walks will begin again at the end of this month, and new volunteers are more than welcome. These walks are a small part of an ongoing project organised by the Bumblebee Conservation Trust aimed at monitoring bumblebee populations, many of which are falling. Our part consists of monthly walks round Mandale Park, recording all the bumblebees (and honey bees) that we see. The walks last about an hour and always take place on fine days to minimise variation caused by the weather. No expertise is needed; there are only about six species of bumblebee involved and they are distinctive and easy to recognise. Some sleepy young queens have already appeared this year, so we can hope for a good start.
