Paul Barrington, Biodiversity Data Manager at the Greater Manchester Ecology unit just sent us the news that the Rochdale Field Naturalists have now submitted 100,000 wildlife records to the GMEU database. Society members started sending in records in 2009, when around ten members sent in the birds seen in their gardens. The number of members, and the scope of recording has continued to grow and we now record birds, butterflies, bees, moths, dragonflies and damselflies, amphibians, mammals, fungi and much more, both inside our gardens and on our local “patch”.
Paul said “These are very high-quality records, across all taxon groups and across a large geographical area. I can’t find the words to properly acknowledge the work you’ve put in to get to where you are. It’s not just the records either, it’s the gaining and retaining members, organising and running events, investing in your members, running conservation projects as well as the record digitisation and sharing”.
