Our first Peregrine Watch has proved to be a great success with more than 100 members of the public stopping to take a look!
Members Pat and Maggie Culkin, Roger Crofts, Pete Knowles and Jan Kidd invited members of the public to come and view the birds on Rochdale town hall through their scopes. The viewing took place from 10.30 – 1.00 on Wednesday 29th May. Initially the group were able to see both male and female birds before the male took flight. The female obligingly sat in the same place for around two hours before returning to her nest of three chicks. These were asleep for most of the morning although occassionally one chick was seen to raise its head above the nest box.
Without exception people were amazed and excited to see the bird so clearly, with everyone leaving with a smile on their face, or saying that the sighting had made their day. Many had been following the antics of the birds on the Rochdale council website http://www.rochdale.gov.uk/falcons
The event was organised by Roger Crofts and members will be back again on Saturday 15th June when it is hoped that the young will be seen flying.
