LOCAL NATURE RECOVERY STRATEGY – DRAFT
For those of you who missed Paul Barrington’s presentation on the draft GM LNRS at Cutgate on 9th January – or those who were there but would like to study the Resources again at leisure and close-up – here are the online links that Paul promised us :
- The State of Nature Report in Greater Manchester
Many of us contributed to this back in 2023 and not surprisingly it makes for depressing reading – but this is the first time that all this information has been brought together for Greater Manchester and will mark the baseline from which any future change will be judged against:

- The Draft Local Nature Recovery Strategy (LNRS) for Greater Manchester – now out for the first stage of Consultation until 31 January 2025.
It has been agreed by all the GM authorities and will be in place from 2025-2035.
NB It does not override the existing GM Strategic Plan and Local Plans which have previously been agreed.
After explaining the need for a Strategy for Nature Recovery there is a review of all the different habitats and indicator species within GM.
Page 36 summarises the Lawton Report’s recommendations for Nature Recovery nationally
Pages 37 -38 describe the Aims and Targets for the GM LNRS – Targets to be reached by 2035.
Pp 40-45 explain how GM LNRS will attempt to create a more effective Network of Green Spaces – more connectedness. And identifies “Opportunity Areas” within the Network where Biodiversity can be enhanced.
P47 explains that even in areas outside the “Networks” actions can and should be taken to make our environment more wildlife friendly and nature rich.

Since the data has been compiled from different sources and at different dates – and a lot of it from published data not fieldwork – this is your opportunity to use your local knowledge to point out gaps, correct the information provided and suggest your own “opportunities” to enhance Nature which may have been missed.
