The workshop is based on Adrian Thomas’s book RSPB Guide to BIRDSONG. It is an
excellent guide and we recommend it to anyone. We will be listening to the CD tracks, pausing to
discuss them as we go. Members can ask for any track to repeated at any time during the
workshop. Birds make all sorts of noises but we’ll be focusing on their calls and songs. We’ll
briefly consider the context within which birds make calls and song. We will concentrate on the
birds you can reasonably expect to hear around Rochdale this time of year. Using the building
blocks of sound and the characteristics of sound we will have the chance to learn how to
recognise the songs of 22 species. The workshop will last between 1.5 and 2 hours, and we’ll
have a break part way through to get a brew, a comfort break and maybe a quick catch up chat
with others. As we won’t be able to meet up outside after the workshop to listen for what birds
might be about (as we did last year) we will provide tick list of the birds we’ve learnt about, so you
can keep your own personal record of what you’ve heard and recognised when you’re next out
and about.
This workshop is a repeat of the workshop we ran in January 2020, but unlike then because we’re
doing it on Zoom, numbers are not limited. If you did it last year, feel free to come along again this
time.
We are planning a second workshop, hopefully for April 29, which again will be on Zoom, but by
then we should be able to follow it up with small outdoor groups later that day and the day after.
We’ll let you know about that one at a later date.
