Our Members’ evening on February 25 2021 was a bit more technical than some, as Charlie Farrell told us all about how to enjoy lockdown with the help of a smartphone and an old wok. His kit for listening to the night sky is a bit more sophisticated, but that really is all you need to have a go at recording the unexpected variety of birdlife that flies over your garden at night. Although you may be able to recogise some of the calls by ear alone, Charlie explained how full analysis needs a PC, a modicum of skill and a great deal of patience. The valuable nocturnal migration (nocmig) data gathered makes the effort worthwhile.
Later, the focus shifted to mammals (and the odd slug) as members shared some of their images and tales of animals that use their gardens after dark.
