About Us

Rochdale Field Naturalist Society was originally founded in 1874 by a group of people passionate about natural history.
2024 was our 150th anniversary year!

The aims of the Society are to stimulate an interest in natural history in Rochdale and the surrounding area, to conserve the natural history of the area, and to educate others of all ages to do likewise.

We have members at all levels of knowledge from interested beginner to those with specialist knowledge.

We have a rich programme of events with something to suit everyone. These range from activities observing, recording and reporting on local natural history in all of its forms; visiting areas of interest by coach or car, hosting talks by speakers on various natural history subjects, and engaging in projects run by likeminded organisations.

All members are encouraged to join our WhatsApp groups.
Guidelines for RFNS WhatsApp Groups
The main group is for urgent messages relating directly to RFNS activities such as news, reminders and enquiries about trips, surveys, meetings, last minute changes, etc.
Our second group is where you can post local sightings, ID requests (particularly if local), local nature news and your flora and fauna photos.

Don’t forget our Facebook page too.
It’s very lively!

All the society activities are organised by and for our members. We have teams that organise our indoor and outdoor events, conservation and education and publicity, as well as Chair, Secretary and Treasurer.
