Sat 12th Jan – Rochdale Field Naturalists’ Society Coach trip to Leighton Moss RSPB Reserve in Cumbria.

Do you know you don’t have to be a RFNS member to come on our coach trips? You can come along, join in or do your own thing as long as you are back in time for the coach to leave. Trips only cost £15 and you can see where we are going on our events page programme, or our facebook page. Come along and try us out. Bring your friends and family – you will all be made very welcome
However, BOOKING IS ESSENTIAL. Please contact Ruth Hardcastle on 07970948175 to book a place on the coach. Cost £15. Depart Manchester Road cul-de-sac Rochdale OL11 4HY 9.00a.m. sharp. The coach will leave for the return at 4.00pm so please get back to where it will be parked (at the Visitors’ Centre) by 3.45pm.

Leighton Moss is a well developed reserve with several excellent hides, a high viewing tower and a variety of habitats.
There is a great variety of wildfowl and wading birds and, in addition, recent sightings have included water rail, bearded tits, kingfisher, merlin, marsh harriers, tree creeper and nuthatch amongst many others. There is a feeding station close to the Visitors’ Centre which is usually very busy (with birds). Otters are resident near the Causeway and some of us saw them on our last visit.
There are good paths throughout and there is a newish path from the Causeway to the Visitors’ Centre to avoid walking along the road. People generally plan their own walk around the reserve in small groups which gives a better chance of seeing more birds.
Please wear suitable outdoor clothing and footwear and take care when walking. You should also bring a snack/packed lunch and a drink, although there is a shop and an excellent cafe with food, cakes and drinks at the Visitors’ Centre.
Admission is free for RSPB members but a charge for non-members.
