Rochdale Field Naturalists have a varied programme of events. We have talks taking place from  September to April and coach trips, car trips, and walks throughout the year. We also carry out surveys and from time to time put on special events.

Talks take place at the Cutgate Baptist Church, next to the Cutgate shopping precinct on Edenfield Road, Rochdale OL11 5AQ. Doors open around 7.00 pm for a 7.30 pm start. Talks cost £2 for members, £3 for non-members. There is ample free parking at the shopping centre. See Map

Coach trips are usually on the second Saturday of the month. We meet at the cul-de-sac at the town center end of Old Manchester Road. OL11 4HY . See Map.

Departure time is usually 9.00am returning at 5.00pm in summer months or 4.00pm in winter. Coach trips cost £15 per person. Booking is essential.  Contact Ruth Hardcastle – Tel. No: 07970 948175 to book a place on the coach.

Car trips are usually on the fourth Saturday of the month and walks on the third Thursday. These meet at 10.00 am also at the Old Manchester Road or at the location of the event.

Owl Pellet Analysis

Owl Pellet Analysis

Feb 24, 10:00am - Feb 24, 1:00pm

The Petrus Hub, 73 Gt George St, Rochdale. OL16 1QG Map

Winter is upon us and the days are cold - so we thought we'd try something different for our 'car' trip in February. Instead of going for a walk in the cold we're going to stay in the warm and dissect owl pellets.
Sonia and Gavin will be leading the group in our first attempt at this sort of dissection and analysis. Gavin has kindly collected the pellets so all we need is for you to come along and try to find out what the owls have been eating. We are expecting to find lots of small mammal bones/skulls, and to help us identify these the Society will provide some ID booklets or sheets. Could be interesting to see if their diet changes at different times. If you have your own owl pellets feel free to bring them.
The event will take place at The Petrus Hub, 73 Gt George St, Rochdale. OL16 1QG. From Manchester Road turn onto Drake Street, then left into Church Stile, then right onto Great George Street. It will start at 10.15 am prompt. Please be on time. We will meet at 10.00am at the Manchester Old Road cul-de-sac Rochdale OL11 4HY as usual for lifts and car sharing. Parking may be an issue. We expect to be there a few hours so bring a packed lunch. We will provide tea and coffee.
We have some dissecting tweezers but if you have any it would be helpful to bring them, any magnifying equipment, and also as the room will only have artificial light bring a suitable (daylight?) desk lamp if you have one. A magnifying lamp would be most useful. You might also find it helpful to bring an old mug or jam jar to soak the pellets in, otherwise paper cups will be provided - but of course these tend to be less stable.Although booking isn't essential it would be very helpful to have an idea of numbers to make sure we have enough equipment so if you think you might be coming along please let Jan Kidd know.
