Owl Pellet Dissection Day – 24 Feb 2018

Who would have thought dissecting owl pellets could be so absorbing? Seventeen of us took up the challenge to find out what our local barn owls had been eating. Gavin very kindly collected lots of  pellets for us so that we weren’t disturbing any birds. So what did we find? Mainly Field Vole skeletons with a few Shrews in some of the pellets collected during the Summer months.

The photos show the group at work, a Field Vole skelton and the shrews lower mandible taken through the microscope.

Many thanks to Gavin and Sonia for leading the event, and to Petrus for the use of their room.
